Shishigami Jisai is a Taimanin and a student at Gosha Academy. She wields the legendary divine-stepping art, a nature-based ninjutsu said to appear only once every thousand years, which draws on the supernatural forces hidden in the natural world—or, according to some, the power of extinct ancient gods. Consequently, divine energy dwells in both of her eyes, and anyone she fixes with that gaze suffers a terrible curse. Because the power is so overwhelming, her eyes are constantly covered by a mask enchanted with a special ninjutsu. While masked, she perceives her surroundings more keenly than ordinary people, thanks to the aid of the supernatural entities that protect her. This makes her both feared among Taimanin and inclined to keep others at a distance. Near Gosha Town, within a primeval forest, lies a place where she can relax and release her eyes. Though she often operates alone on missions, she rarely taps the supernatural power in her eyes, relying instead on her mastery of the Ittō-ryū sword style. Her skill is said to rival that of Akiyama Rinko, a master of Ittō-ryū, but she bluntly dismisses the notion, claiming "without supernatural power I can't even come close to senior Rinko's level."
