Merci is a former female cat who became a fairy kettsie. As a cat, she was taken in by a gruff old woman who called her simply "cat" while caring for her. The woman had once been wealthy but lost everything to fraud, grew distrustful of humans, and eventually froze to death on the streets while still in debt. When the cat's master died, she seemed destined to follow, but a fairy kettsie hiding in the Human Realm rescued her and took her to the Demon Realm, where she transformed into a fairy. Lacking a name and still called "cat," she adopted the last words the old woman muttered as her own name. After spending some time as a kettsie in the Demon Realm, she felt out of place and returned to the Human Realm. As a fairy with a more human-like form, she discovered the pleasure of using her charms to tempt people. Perhaps influenced by the old woman, she's also greedy for money and now roams the bustling streets of Yomihara, preying on crowds of people and cash. While she couldn't eat chocolate as a cat, she now loves the sweet, warming treat. She dislikes the cold winter, but she adores February when chocolate fills the city, and on that day she hunts for chocolate rather than money.
