She is a half-vampire, half-human outcast who lives as a Taimanin. She received swordsmanship instruction from her grandfather, the Fuuma Eight-General Shinganji Gen-an, and was once slated to inherit his position. However, because her grandfather was disgraced for aiding the Fuuma main family during an internal conflict, Kurenai left the Fuuma village and now operates independently with no allegiance. From her former Fuuma Eight-General lineage she is also an old acquaintance of Fuuma Kotaro, the heir of the main family. She can deliberately unleash the dormant "demon" power within herself to gain overwhelming strength. When she does, her eyes turn crimson, black wings sprout on her back, and she becomes surrounded by a miasma of darkness. In this demonic awakening, Kurenai possesses a terrifying power far beyond that of ordinary humans, but the price is that her body and mind are gradually consumed by the demon, causing her to lose her humanity and will over time.
