She is Nanase Mai of a future world on the brink of annihilation by the dimensional invaders known as Brain Freayers. She travels the ruined cities and historic sites in a paper-crafted Craft-Mobile, locating the books that are gradually disappearing, retrieving and protecting them. All of this is to prevent the world's destruction so humanity can restart once the threat is gone. She doesn't confront the Brain Freayers herself, trusting that the Bandit Taimanin resistance—led by her former comrades—will secure the future. In school she was overly shy and earnest, but long wanderings have made her a fully grown adult. She has refined her paper-spirit technique to the point that the animated paper earns her the nickname "Divine Spirit." Her Craft-Mobile, a new art that infuses paper with natural energy to create a moving vehicle, lets her travel at high speed whenever she wishes, though it collapses after a limited time.
