Elza Swanson is a young soldier serving in the United States' special forces. The military is researching augmentation methods that replace parts of the skeleton and muscles with mechanical components to further strengthen the body, and they were recruiting soldiers to serve as test subjects. Because the goal was mass-produced augmentations, the resulting appearance is heavily mechanical, and once altered a soldier cannot revert to their original body, so few volunteers came forward. Elza, who was stationed at a regional base, stepped up. Though people expected a zealous warrior, she simply volunteered because "it looked cool." In the preliminary exams she scored low on intelligence tests but earned high marks across stress resistance, obedience, physical ability, and health, and she passed with flying colors. The augmentations gave her enhanced strength and vital functions, a neural link to electronic weapons, and toxin resistance, and she adapted well after the procedure. However, later testing revealed problems with memory and knowledge: she couldn't recall detailed weapon operations or settings, often misunderstood mission details, and forgot orders immediately. Since she can't be returned to her original body, the only option is to keep using her, but she remains upbeat, saying she's "cool like a manga hero and life's gotten easier." She feels sorry for forgetting commands quickly and tries hard, though results lag behind. With a straightforward, bright, fearless, and friendly personality, she's generally liked by those around her.
