She is a Shuronpe woman who roams the Demon Realm with a pack of beasts. Though she is over two hundred years old, her age beyond a certain point is only visible in her horns, making it hard to tell. Shuronpe gather in several families to form herds and wander, earning a living by selling goods they acquire and the handicrafts they make. In particular, items made from the hair of Shuronpe women are highly prized as artworks—beautiful, smooth, soft, and excellent conduits for magic—so they avoid conflicts over the hair by wandering. Rumor has it that, despite being scattered across the Demon Realm, they share information as a whole and sell that information as merchandise. Maeve is unusual among Shuronpe, having been born with skin of a different color and once shunned as an outcast. However, because of her kind heart, literary and martial talents, and beauty, she fell in love with a husband, led him to become the herd's leader, and was cherished with a black gemstone. After her husband's death she did not become the new leader's wife, left the herd and settled in Yomihara. Now she lives in Yomihara, longing for a chance to ascend to the surface world and the connections needed for it.
