Akebi is a cat spirit who was once a ninja cat owned by Igawa Sakura when she was a child, but it transformed into a demon beast and took human form. During Sakura's training in the art of shadow-stepping, an accident swallowed her into shadow, causing her disappearance; that incident triggered the beast's transformation and allowed her to return to the human world. Upon her return she immediately tried to ambush Sakura for revenge, but was beaten back and has since been kept as a familiar. Now she grudgingly serves as one of the dorm mothers overseeing the student dormitory, reluctantly tending to the student Taimanin—but she doesn't seem entirely opposed to being appreciated for her care. She calls herself "Cat-Spirit Teacher," and insists others use that title. Her true name is "Akebi," a nickname Sakura gave her when she was still a pet cat because it sounded cute. Akebi is embarrassed to reveal her real name, telling others "don't touch my true name," yet Sakura readily discloses it, making it an open secret. Her ability, Fluid Dark Escape, turns her entire body (including costume accessories) pitch-black like liquid darkness, allowing her to flow through narrow gaps, slip into boxes, and even merge with prosthetic bodies, moving through them as if she were blood. Because she only changes form, her overall volume and weight remain unchanged.
